Stetson Bennett is one of the greatest stories in recent college football history. As a former walk-on he was given the opportunity to start at a program like Georgia, and nearly everyone questioned whether he would even come close to leading them to any amount of success.

He obviously proved everyone wrong by winning two titles, but to this day people still question if he deserves credit for that or if Georgia won because of the immense talent that surrounded him. One person who doesn’t question his impact is former offensive coordinator Todd Monken who just gave Bennett one of the greatest compliments of all time.

Todd Monken still has Stetson Bennett’s back to this day

Monken came to Bennett’s defense recently when it comes to how he is viewed during his time at Georgia. He believes that Georgia won their first national title with him, but their second title the following year was won because of him.

It’s hard to argue against that because Bennett did make a huge leap between the two championship winning seasons. He was still a great player during the Bulldogs’ first title run, but he greatly improved and because a force during the 2022 season. And there’s really no way to deny that because he was a Heisman Trophy finalist that year.

There’s no denying that Georgia won their two titles because of the talent all across the football field. But that talent couldn’t win without a great quarterback leading their team, and that’s what Bennett was.

Sure he may have been more of a game manager in 2021, but he still made all the plays required to win a national title. But then in 2022 he was Georgia’s best player and was the reason why they went 15-0 and repeated as champions.

The negative discourse surrounding Bennett will probably never end, but real football fans know that Georgia couldn’t have won their titles without him, and according to Monken that was especially the case in 2022.
