Georgia football has been on quite the run in the transfer portal this week. They have earned four commitments so far this week, with the highlight coming at wide receiver when Texas A&M transfer Noah Thomas committed to the Bulldogs.
While Kirby Smart and his staff have been doing very well in the transfer portal recently, it hasn’t been perfect for Georgia as one of their top defenders recently entered the portal. And that player is linebacker Damon Wilson.
Wilson is coming off his second season at Georgia where he capped off a solid sophomore season by recording 22 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles. While these aren’t the greatest stats in the world, they are a massive step up from his freshman season. And with much more playing time on the horizon next season, Wilson was set to be one of the leaders of this team.
That however will not be happening since he entered the portal. However, the hope was that Smart could maybe convince Wilson to change his mind and stick with Georgia. Smart’s already done that once this year, so he most certainly could do it again.
But even that doesn’t seem likely to happen anymore after two predictions came in for Wilson to commit to a Big Ten school.
Damon Wilson predicted to Ohio State
Both Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos with On3 have officially predicted Wilson to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes. This all but ends Georgia’s chances of being able to convince Wilson to remain in Athens.
Wilson is yet to announce his commitment, so in theory Georgia still has a chance, but this is not something any UGA fan should hold their breath on.
Wilson is someone that will be difficult if not impossible for Smart to replace. Georgia’s best bet might be going into the transfer portal themselves and adding a new player, but it will be very difficult to find a player of Wilson’s caliber. But Smart hopefully will be able to make something work, because the rest of the roster is beginning to take shape so this is a position he has to figure out if Georgia wants to compete for championships again next season.
