The LA Rams still haven't decided who their backup quarterback will be for the upcoming season. Either Stetson Bennett or Ty Simpson will win the job, and both players have good arguments for why they deserve the job. One of Simpson's best stats in his favor from the Rams three preseason games was his impressive 78 percent completion percentage.
This is a higher completion percentage than every other quarterback in the NFL from last season which sounds like a great thing, but his yards per completion was just 8.1 which would've been dead last.

Ty Simpson's best preseason stat isn't what it seems
Simpson was efficient with the ball throughout the preseason, no one can deny that. His low yards per completion though partially explains why he was so efficient. Most NFL quarterbacks are able to make short throws with ease. One difference between a good NFL quarterback and a great one is the ability to push the ball down the field, and Simpson didn't show that during these preseason games.
That may have been by design by the Rams, but it also could've been a result of him not being ready to play at the NFL level quite yet. Stetson Bennett however wasn't much better as he only averaged 9.5 yards per completion throughout the preseason.
It may look like the Rams did this by design for both players likely in an attempt to keep their play calling as vanilla as possible to not give anything away ahead of the regular season. Fans in favor of Simpson though shouldn't cling to his high completion percentage because that alone doesn't tell the full story.
LA Rams are running out of time to make their final decision on who their backup QB will be
The Rams are running out of time to decide who their backup will be. Final 53-man rosters have to be announced by 6:00 pm EST on Sunday, Aug. 30, but head coach Sean McVay has already said both players will make the team. The Rams however have a little more time than that to make their final decision, but not by much.
LA's first game of the season is on Thursday, Sept. 10. In theory this is the latest they can announce who their backup is, but in actuality they will have to decide sooner than that. Whoever the backup is will need time to mentally prepare like they are going to play in this game because one freak injury to starter Matthew Stafford and they will be in the game.
The rest of the team would probably like to know who the backup is as well that way they can be ready for them to step in if an injury happens to Stafford.
The Rams more than likely will announce who their backup is in the next week. Both Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson have good arguments in their favor, but Bennett has more experience and has built more trust with the Rams than Simpson, so the edge might be in his favor as of now.
