Georgia football still has some work to do to get into the College Football Playoff. Last week when the CFP committee ranked the Bulldogs No. 12, it became very clear that the committee was not a fan of Georgia’s resume. Not many understood where that was coming from considering the great wins Georgia already this season.

Fast forward to this week and Georgia’s path to the CFP is a lot easier. After beating Tennessee 31-17 on Saturday, UGA now only needs to win their final two games to make it in. And Georgia will be massive favorites against both UMass and Georgia Tech.

So assuming Georgia wins these games, the only other thing to worry about is where Georgia will be seeded. There are a lot of great teams ahead of Georgia in the updated AP Poll that likely will all be when the updated CFP rankings come out as well. But a recent viral stat shows that maybe Georgia should be ranked higher than a lot of the teams currently above them.

Same number of ranked wins as AP Poll’s top 5

The latest AP Poll’s top five consists of Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Penn State and Indiana. All of these teams are either undefeated or only have one loss, so on paper it does make sense that they are all ranked above Georgia. But this stat shared by Fox Sports Chris Fallica tells a different story.

So far this season, Georgia has three ranked wins against Clemson, Texas and Tennessee. The entire top five listed above also only has three. Two of those ranked wins are against one of the other teams in the top 5 while Oregon has two of those ranked wins. So removing Oregon means Georgia has three times as many ranked wins as teams ranked 2-5.

So even though these five teams have an argument to be ranked above Georgia, there is a good argument for Georgia to be above them as well. Sure the Bulldogs have two losses, but they were both on the road against teams inside the top 10.

It will be interesting to see what the committee does in their updated rankings because Kirby Smart and Georgia are fighting to work their way up to earn a seed in the 5-8 range. One of these seeds means Georgia would host a first round playoff game, which is much better than playing on the road.

So hopefully Georgia keeps winning and teams in front of them lose so UGA has the best chance possible to host a playoff game at Sanford Stadium.
