Georgia is about to embark on the College World Series for the first time since 2008. The Bulldogs had a great shot to win it all that year, but after a runner-up finish this year’s team is ready to bring a National Championship back to Athens for the second time in program history.
The good news is that Georgia is one of the betting favorites to win it all. But don’t tell head coach Wes Johnson that because he isn’t interested in what Vegas has to say whatsoever.
“Baseball is a game that doesn't care what you did yesterday and doesn't care what you're doing tomorrow,” Johnson said via 247Sports.com. “You better win today. So we don't ever look at favorites, underdogs. I think you heard our guys talk about, we're going to wake up today. We're going to try to be the best we can today.”
Wes Johnson doesn’t care what Vegas thinks of his team
Vegas odds are fun to look at. Not only do they tend to be pretty accurate, but even if they’re slightly off they are a good way for fans to know who the most likely team to win a game is.
Their odds however are the worst thing for the actual team. The last thing anyone actually playing or coaching in a game needs to know is what the Vegas odds are. Vegas only has an impact on the game if Georgia lets it get to their heads, so they are better off ignoring Vegas altogether and just handling their business like they don’t even exist.
That is a great strategy for Johnson and Georgia to use throughout their entire run at the College Word Series, but it may not be a bad idea to use what Vegas is saying about their first CWS game against Texas as extra motivation.
What does Vegas think about Georgia at the College World Series?
Georgia and Texas are two of the best teams at the College World Series. According to FanDuel Sportsbook North Carolina is the betting favorite to win it all at +290, but Georgia (+300) and Texas (+320) aren’t too far behind.
Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
These odds would indicate that Vegas believes Georgia has the best chance to advance out of their four-team bracket since North Carolina is in the other bracket, but they actually favor Texas in their matchup on Saturday night by 1.5 runs.
That is a bit strange considering Georgia won the SEC regular season and tournament championships, are 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament and a better seed than the Longhorns, but for some reason Vegas is in love with Texas for Saturday’s game.
Johnson said he couldn’t care less about what Vegas thinks about his team, but everyone in the locker room knows they can beat anyone. So maybe it isn’t the worst idea for Johnson to let his guys know that Vegas thinks they’re going to lose Saturday night just to keep them one last jolt of motivation.
First pitch between Georgia and Texas is scheduled for 8:00 pm EST Saturday, June 13.
