Wes Johnson just got Georgia back to the College World Series for the first time in 18 years. He also helped Georgia win the SEC regular season title and their first conference tournament championship in program history.
By all accounts last season was a massive success, but the last thing anyone wants is for Georgia to be a one hit wonder. The good news is that Johnson was cooking with fire in the Transfer Portal and signed the No. 1 class in the country.

Wes Johnson relying on the same formula to get Georgia back to the CWS
One year ago Johnson signed the No. 1 Transfer Portal class in the country ahead of the 2026 season. That success in the portal led Georgia to dominate the SEC all season long and finally get back to the College World Series. So if it worked once why not try it again?
For the second year in a row Georgia has the No. 1 Transfer Portal class in the country. Heading to Georgia this year are some of the best pitchers and hitters in the country, and with one of the best coaching staffs ready to coach them up the sky is the limit for this team next season.
Georgia fans loved cheering their Diamond Dawgs on last season. This team finally breathed some life into a fan base that is extremely passionate about baseball, and they finally gave them something to cheer about. And it looks like that won't be stopping anytime soon.
Georgia baseball has a chance to become just like Kirby Smart's football program
There's a good chance that Georgia baseball reaches the same success that Georgia's football program has found under Kirby Smart. So far Johnson's tenure is nearly identical to the start of Smart's tenure, and it's looking like it could continue following the same outline.
It took Smart just two years to win the SEC and make the College Football Playoff. Johnson on the other hand won the SEC and made the College World Series in three years. Both Johnson and Smart were first time head coaches as well, so this immediate success was not expected for either coach.
Smart went on to get Georgia to the top of the college football world in 2021 and 2022. That is what Johnson will attempt to do with the baseball program, but Smart's path to winning a national tile shows how difficult it will be for Johnson to do the same.
After winning the SEC and making the National Championship game in 2017, Smart didn't get back to the playoff for another four years. He also didn't win the SEC against for another five years. The same thing could happen to Johnson, but that shouldn't be any reason to panic.
Johnson has already proven that he can get Georgia close to the top of the baseball world, he just needed to win a couple more games to bring a national title home to Athens. It by no means will be easy for him now, but he has earned Georgia's trust and patience, and with enough time it feels like he will win a National Championship just like Smart did.
