Georgia fans were not happy when Texas announced that they were stealing Will Muschamp and hiring him as their new Defensive Coordinator. Muschamp was on the staff for both National Championships under Kirby Smart and he has continued to excel in his role off the field as a defensive analyst the last two years.

But Texas came in and stole him from Georgia and ended the good run he has been on with UGA. His departure however isn't all bad for Georgia because Smart has a dominant record over defenses that were coached by Muschamp.

Will Muschamp's departure could be a blessing for Georgia

Muschamp has been a Defensive Coordinator at four other schools before joining Georgia's staff. This means that Smart has coached against him multiple times throughout his career before he became one of his assistants.

Smart has coached against a Muschamp led defense five times during his career, and he holds a 4-1 record in those matchups. On top of that, Smart and Georgia are a perfect 3-0 against Texas since they joined the SEC as well.

So while losing Muschamp will be tough to overcome, UGA can be happy knowing that Smart has found a lot of success against teams when Muschamp is in control of their defense.

This past success however does not automatically mean they will continue to beat Muschamp and Texas. That is especially the case after the shocking decision quarterback Arch Manning announced on Friday. But Smart clearly knows how to coach against a defense led by Muschamp, and seeing how he ran his defense at Georgia will only help Smart even more.

Georgia and Texas are not scheduled to play next season, but there is a chance they could meet in the SEC Championship game. If that doesn't happen then the Bulldogs will have their first chance to battle Muschamp at Texas when they meet during the 2027 season.
