Georgia Football: Receiver Commit Talks Coaching Change (video)

The Georgia football team picked up a commitment from a receiver this weekend, barring no change in the coaching staff.

After quarterback, the Georgia team’s biggest need in recruiting is at receiver. With the departure of Malcolm Mitchell, their leading pass-catcher, at the end of this season, the Dawgs need to post great results in the Class of 2016 at this position.

According to Jeff Sentell of DawgNation, Javon Wims committed this weekend to play for the Dawgs next year. His relationship with receivers coach Bryan McClendon and future-Dawg Jacob Eason were big parts of his decision. But, he did make a point to shed some light on his current view on the coaching situation at the school.

“I really hope everything works out and coach Mark Richt will be there next season,” he said. “I hope the staff will be fine and that would pretty much solidify my decision, but for now Georgia is where I am going.”

Wims (6’4’’ 215) currently plays for Hinds Community College in Mississippi making him eligible for two more years of service at UGA.

The Dawgs are in desperate need of a big-bodied receiver. They are also going after top-receiver recruit Kyle Davis allowing the dreams to start brewing in the minds of Georgia fans of the possibility of having two 215-pound pass-catchers on the outside.

If the stress of the coaching situation was not already taking its toll on the Georgia community, now it has officially sprinkled into recruiting. Everyone has been aware of the murmurs that any of the UGA commits may rethink their decision amidst a coaching change, but here it is spelled out plain and simple.

It makes sense that a recruit would feel this way because they have been recruited by this person and built a relationship, and then all of a sudden they are not the coach anymore. On the other hand, it puts the athletic director and the president in a sticky situation.

Does Mark Richt need to be fired? I believe he does. Should he be fired if the team’s top recruits, including Eason, de-commit as a result? I have to go with my gut on this one and say no.

What a situation to be in? The thinking on this is that Georgia needs a headman that will get them prepared for every game big or small. The only thing is, certain players are so good that a team cannot pass on having them on their team. Eason is that good. Sacrifices should be made for a player of his caliber.

Ride out Richt’s tenure for a season or two with Eason as the quarterback. If things are like they were with Stafford or worse, then maybe it is time to show Richt the door.
