Georgia football took the lead in the 2019 recruiting class according to 247 Sports following the commitment of JUCO star Jermaine Johnson.

What a week it has been for Georgia football recruiting. After adding three superstar recruits to the 2019 class on Sunday, the Dawgs received another commitment Thursday night. This time from the no. 1 JUCO player in the nation, Jermaine Johnson.

The three commits from Sunday lifted Georgia’s 2019 class to no. 2 in 247 Sports’ rankings. But thanks to Johnson, the Dawgs are on top once again. He’s the 17th player to commit to Georgia for 2019. The count is up to five 5-Star recruits, 11 4-Stars and one 3-Star.

Jermaine Johnson is a defensive end. 247 Sports has him as a 4-Star prospect and the no. 1 JUCO player in the nation. Which is an improvement from his recruiting out of high school. As a member of the 2017 high school recruiting class, 247 Sports gave him just 2-Stars. He was the no. 1,982 player in the nation, no. 93 weakside defensive end, and the no 10 player in Minnesota.

He received mild interest from a few programs initially, but after a great freshman year at Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas, he became the most sought after JUCO player in the country.

He made 58 tackles, 13 for a loss with eight sacks in 2017 at Independence. He also forced and recovered three fumbles. After a great year at the JUCO level, three power-five schools offered him a scholarship. But Kirby Smart and the Dawgs were the first elite program to offer him. The offers began pouring in after that, but Smart clearly made the best impression. He visited Georgia on May 17 and July 27. That was enough to get him to commit on August 2.

The Georgia Bulldogs are not finished with the 2019 class as there are still six months left until National Signing Day. Following the impending firing of Urban Meyer, Georgia could add a few more players from their 2019 class. The Dawgs are well on their way to their second-straight no. 1 recruiting class.
