#5: 2005 Season

AP Post Season Poll: No. 10

Record: 10-3

1st-Round picks: 0

2nd-3rd-Round picks: 5

No. 39 All-Time Georgia team in SRS on Sports-Reference.com (13.75)

The 2005 squad was D.J. Shockley’s team, after waiting in the wings for three years, behind David Greene, it was finally his time to take over. It was time to see what the former five-star recruit could do in the driver’s seat.

Georgia had neither a 1000 yard rusher nor a 600 yard receiver, yet they managed to win the SEC East.

The Dawgs started the season off winning seven games in a row. Then Georgia dropped back to back games against Florida and Auburn. The Dawgs got things back on track after that and won three straight, including the SEC Championship game.

After turning things around to end the season 10-2 the Bulldogs would agree to play West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl. This game is the reason I will never forget the name, Steve Slaton.

Slaton and Pat White carved up Georgia’s defense in the first half. Georgia would come back and get within three, but the comeback just was not meant to be.

This game was one of the those matchups that I will never forget because it was truly shocking to watch a team enforce its will on Georgia as West Virginia did. That left a lasting impression on me.

That 2005 Georgia team would also be the last SEC Championship team until 2017.
