After Sunday’s commitment to the 2023 Georgia football class, there is no argument that the Dawgs are LBU.
Georgia football fans know they hold the linebacker university bragging rights, but after the latest addition, it’s their official title across the country.
On Sunday afternoon, former Michigan commitment Raylen Wilson made it official with the Dawgs, giving them two of the top linebackers in this recruiting cycle.
While that statement seems repetitive — it is.
Since co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann stepped on campus, he has elevated that position into something out of this world.
Wilson is just the newest member of that group, as he knew Athens was where he needed to play college ball.
With its latest addition, Georgia football has the best argument for the LBU title.
Since the 2017 recruiting cycle, Georgia signed 22 linebackers, including five 5-stars, 16 4-stars and one 3-star.
Of those 22 guys, Schumann was responsible for 19 of them. He has been a massive reason that Georgia is now considered LBU. Not to mention, he is responsible for both of the 2023 guys currently committed to the Dawgs.
Schumann was the primary recruiter for Wilson, which solidified the LBU argument even more, and he got C.J. Allen another 4-star to commit earlier this year.
According to the247Sports Composite rankings, Wilson is the No. 72 overall, No.5 linebacker and the No. 17 player out of Florida. As for Allen, he is the No. 10 linebacker and No.15 player in Georgia.
While those overall numbers include a few transfers, they are still people who Schumann got to come to Georgia.
However, Wilson really makes you think that with Schumann at Georgia, the Dawgs can land whatever linebacker they want.
He committed to Michigan last December over the Dawgs, but this recruitment proves that you never burn bridges, and if a player needs to be in the class, then keep pursuing him.
Georgia got a visit from him in March for an unofficial visit. Then he visited Athens on June 3 for an official visit, which he followed up with an official visit to Michigan on June 10.
Wilson also took one to Florida on June 17, but the Gators were too late at that point. The Dawgs had already sealed the deal.
On June 28, Wilson decommits from Michigan, and not a week later, he makes it official that he will be committing to the Dawgs.
Schumann loves instinctive players, and Wilson is one of those guys. He has solid read and react ability, and his horizontal speed is impressive. At 6-2 and 213-pounds, Wilson is already sitting at a good weight for the college level, and when Georgia gets him on the right program, he will gain some more size.
Wilson is explosive, and the fluidity in his hips allows him to utilize his quickness when closing in on the ball. Georgia likes linebackers who can blitz, and Wilson is someone who can avoid the blocks and get to the quarterbacks.
Last season, he recorded 139 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, five sacks and forced two fumbles. Those stats are in his junior year, and it’s fun to imagine what kind of havoc he will create during his senior campaign.
Staying healthy will be key, of course, but Wilson should impress even more this fall, and it’ll be exciting to see where he finishes on the recruiting rankings.
Wilson is probably one of the most athletic linebackers in this class. He is a stud and fits the mold of Georgia football linebackers that Schumann and head coach Kirby Smart have instilled into the program. There is a standard, and Wilson saw that when he made the right decision on the Dawgs.
Georgia is LBU, and he has the best chance of getting in the NFL with the Dawgs, and he knows it.
With Wilson’s pledge, the Dawgs are now No. 6 overall on the 247Sports team rankings and sit No.1 in the SEC rankings. Georgia is already off to a solid start for July, and Wilson’s commitment will be one of many this month.
