After an action-packed weekend that saw Georgia punch their ticket to the College World Series for the first time since 2008, Georgia will head to Omaha with as good of a chance as anyone to win a National Championship. It won’t be easy as there are seven other teams that are all playing really good baseball as well, but they have proven they can beat anyone who stands in their way.
Georgia only has one National Championship in their program's history when they won it all in 1990. They nearly got it done in 2008, but the Bulldogs will look to end their 36-year drought that has lasted far too long.
The good news is that Georgia is one of the clear favorites to win it all this year, and there are three reasons why they will bring a National Championship home to Athens in a couple weeks.
1. No team is as hot as Georgia
Georgia is the hottest team in the country right now, and it might not be close. The quickest way to get to the College World Series is by winning five straight games, and that is exactly what Georgia just did.
They won the Athens Regional two weekends ago by going 3-0, and all three games were won relatively easily. They then hosted Mississippi State in the Super Regional round this past weekend and beat them two times in row to advance to the CWS.
Going back in time even further Georgia also won the SEC Tournament by winning three games in a row as well.
This Georgia team is on an eight game win streak and have beaten multiple really good teams in the process, so not only are they hotter than any other team but it is clear that they can beat anyone they get matched up against.
2. Georgia will benefit from All-SEC College World Series bracket
Georgia won the SEC regular season and tournament championship this season which left no doubt that they are the top dogs in the south. That could come in handy when the CWS begins because their four-team bracket to kick off the College World Series could feature three other SEC teams.
Georgia's first opponent is already known as they will play the Texas Longhorns in their first game at the CWS. The other two teams in their bracket will punch their tickets on Monday, but it is extremely likely that it will be Alabama and Oklahoma joining Georgia and Texas.
Georgia didn't play any of these teams this season, but they proved they are better than all three by winning the SEC regular season and tournament championship. But even if they didn't play any of these teams they do share common opponents, so that will make scouting each team much easier.
3. Georgia can outscore anyone
Why is Georgia the hottest team in the country? It all has to do with their bats and how they have the best offense in the country right now.
This Georgia team is capable of outscoring anyone. Georgia fans saw that this weekend because they had to score 13 and 11 runs to just barely get by Mississippi State in both games.
In a perfect world Georgia wouldn't have to score that many runs to win, but their pitching has been a bit of liability recently. Their pitching could ultimately catch up to them at some point, but even if they give up a lot of runs Georgia's offense is able to keep pace with anyone.
The College World Series schedule will be released on Monday when the full eight-team field is set, but Georgia's first game in Omaha will be played on Friday or Saturday against the Texas Longhorns.
