Recruiting season is about to really heat up now that the calendar has turned to May. Every school in the country is done with spring ball, so the summer months give coaches plenty of time to hit the recruiting trail hard.
That is exactly what Kirby Smart plans to do with Georgia, and one of the top targets on his mind is four-star defensive back Chance Gilbert.
He is someone that Georgia has been targeting for years, and a new update from On3's Radi Nabulsi indicates that Georgia is the current leader in his recruitment right now.

4-star Chance Gilbert explains why Georgia is his No. 1 school
Georgia appears to be up against some heavy hitters in Gilbert's recruitment. According to 247Sports it is Georgia, Auburn, Clemson and Alabama who are the top teams battling for him right now, but that is what makes the below comment from Gilbert so surprising.

'Half of these teams right now, they're like on the downfall. So you can't go wrong with Georgia.'

"Half of these teams right now, they're like on the downfall."
Now that is a statement.
When looking at this comment though and thinking about the three schools Georgia is up against it makes sense. Auburn has been bad for a long time and Clemson has significantly fallen off from where they were during the 2010s. Then there is Alabama who is still a really good team, but in the two years since Nick Saban retired they haven't won anything of significance.
Georgia however hasn't been slowing down in recent years. After winning back-to-back national titles they rattled off a perfect 12-0 regular season in 2023 followed by two SEC titles in a row the last two years.
This is success that these three other schools can't compete with right now, and that is why Georgia is the current leader in Gilbert's recruitment.
The hope now is that Smart can get this recruitment to the finish line soon because it would be nice to add a strong defensive back like Gilbert after losing one of their top commits earlier this week.
