This past weekend Georgia witnessed four-star wide receiver Amare Patterson commit to North Carolina over them. Patterson is a player that Georgia desperately wanted, so for him commit to UNC of all schools was tough to see.

Georgia thought they were in a great spot with Patterson coming out of his official visit to Athens on May 15, but it turns out that the fear of major issues in the 2027 class when it comes to competing in the NIL era that Georgia fans have had is very real.

Amare Patterson is another shocking recruiting loss for Georgia

It's one thing if Georgia were losing recruitments to other elite programs. It still isn't fun to lose any recruit, but when it's to programs like Alabama, Ohio State and Texas it at least makes sense.

North Carolina is not one of those schools.

Losing to "lesser" programs has become far too common in the 2027 recruiting class. There have been multiple incidents this year alone where recruits are picking programs more on North Carolina's level, like when Jerry Outhouse flipped to UCLA.

The only logical explanation for these losses is that Georgia isn't competing when it comes to NIL. Georgia has plenty of NIL, but it is well documented that they would rather pay their current players than buy recruits.

And while that strategy has worked out and led to multiple championships, it may be costing them a chance at signing an elite 2027 recruiting class.

Where do things stand for Georgia in the 2027 recruiting class?

Georgia is in a really strange spot with the 2027 recruiting class. When you look at their current commits you will find a lot of impressive players like five-stars Kemon Spell and Jaxon Dollar along with elite quarterback commit Colton Nussmeier.

But the Bulldogs only have the No. 13 class in the country on 247 Sports, and that isn't good enough.

A big reason why Georgia is ranked so low is because of these losses to lesser programs. They also have a lot of low three-stars committed to their recruiting class as well. Kirby Smart and his staff obviously see something in those players that the recruiting sites do not, but it is a little concerning seeing Georgia ranked so low at this point in the offseason.

When looking at how losing Patterson's recruitment impacts Georgia it really isn't that bad though. Georgia just flipped four-star receiver Jamir Dean from Penn State who is he No. 126 player in the country, and they also have a commitment from high three-star receiver Taureen Rawlins as well. Georgia more than likely will still want to add one more receiver, but they do have plenty of time to find that recruit.

Some fans may want to smash the panic button, but it may not be time for that just yet. Georgia is still within striking range of signing one of the best classes in the country, so as long as Smart starts making some big moves soon they should be just fine.
