5-star Georgia commit Kemon Spell reveals how Kirby Smart overcame smaller NIL offer

The No. 1 running back in the 2027 recruiting class is Kemon Spell who's been committed to Georgia since February. On Wednesday Spell opened up about his recruitment and revealed that he will make $1 million during his freshman season next year. He also said that he could've made more at other schools, but he turned those offers down because of Kirby Smart.

This week Spell proved that money isn't the thing that matters most to him, and in the below quote he explained that Georgia still earned his commitment because of how great a coach Kirby Smart is and because he thinks UGA will best prepare him for the NFL.

Kemon Spell chose Georgia for far more than money

Kirby Smart has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't want players who only care about how much money they make. He understands that NIL will carry some level of importance for everyone, but he believes it shouldn't be the thing that matters most.

Spell just proved that NIL wasn't the thing that matters the most to him.

He admitted that he will make $1 million next year, but he could've made more than that. So instead of choosing a school that would pay him more he chose Georgia because of Kirby Smart's impressive reputation both as a winner and developer of talent.

No school has had more draft picks than Georgia since 2021. No school has won more championships since then either. So not only is Spell going somewhere where he is making a lot of money, but he chose the school with a proven track record of success that no one else can beat over the last five years.

Some fans and analysts may still question why he didn't go where he can make the most money, but Smart will sleep well knowing he got the exact player he is looking for.

Georgia earned a commitment from Kemon Spell at a bargain

$1 million is a lot of money, but $2 million is a lot more. That is the amount that fellow five-star running back David Gabriel-Georges is getting from Tennessee to play for the Vols.

Gabriel-Georges isn't ranked as high as Spell, but Tennessee is still paying him double what Georgia is. Georgia can now spend that extra million that Tennessee no longer has to make their roster better across the field, so they were able to save money and still get the better player.

Tennessee also has zero championships in recent history to go along with a whole bunch of losses to Georgia. Gabriel-Georges will still get his money, but based on recent history it's unlikely to come with any championships.

Spell will arrive in Athens next season where he will immediately compete for playing time. He has a chance to be one of the best running backs in the Kirby Smart era, but that can only happen if he stays at Georgia for his entire career. If he is already turning down money as a high school recruit chances are he will avoid the Transfer Portal and be a Bulldog for life.
