Mike Bobo has his fair share of critics entering the 2026 season, former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray isn’t one of them.
Kirby Smart has elevated the definition for success at the University of Georgia. After winning back-to-back national titles, the level of expectation for the program skyrocketed. Since that level of expectation has risen, there have been several Bulldogs catch unnecessary criticism.
Guys like Stetson Bennett and Jake Fromm caught heat several times, even if they had a solid game against a stacked SEC team. However, not many can say they have received as much unnecessary criticism as offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has, but his former quarterback and SEC record holder in career passing yards was quick to his defense.
Aaron Murray is quick to Mike Bobo's defense
In a podcast episode with Miles Garrett on The Nest ATL, Garrett asked Murray what fans misunderstood about Bobo. Garrett also prefaced the question by stating how Bobo's offense was very similar to what former offensive coordinator Todd Monken ran during his championship seasons at Georgia. In response, Murray made some valid points in his statement backing Bobo, saying that "everyone says 'we need Monken back' or 'we need Todd Monken's offense.' In reality Bobo’s offense has been fine, but the lack of a receiver plan has hurt. The outside, I don't see Ladd McConkey. I don't see Brock Bowers. Like you can only do with that you have around you. And last year to defend Mike a little bit, he had a fresh year starting quarterback. And Gunner (Stockton) needed to mature and grow in certain areas as a quarterback."
In short, Murray continued to defend the offense by also bringing up two other valid points. He mentioned how the offense "won us a lot of games" and that even though Georgia's running game "has not been consistent" the past three or four years, the team "has the pieces" to be successful in that again. Once they are successful in running the ball consistently then that will open up the play action and use deep shots like what many fans have wanted the past few seasons.
Georgia fans should listen to what Aaron Murray is saying about Mike Bobo
To start with Murray’s first point, Bobo did play with exactly what was given to him a year ago. A fresh quarterback paired with an electric playmaker like Zachariah Branch means there are great opportunities for wide receiver screens, which in turn made Branch the Georgia record holder in receptions in a season. Now that Stockton is more comfortable in the system and has reportedly been taking more downfield shots this offseason, fans might finally get what they've been waiting for.
Georgia also has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2019. Even though they have had a stable of running backs be successful since then, the fact remains the same that they have not had one back step up and be the guy. Now that Nate Frazier returns with Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips Jr., this season could be exactly what Murray said.
So, Georgia fans, Murray is exactly right. Take a deep breath. Georgia's offense has been doing great, despite what the critics are saying. Not only have they been doing great, but they are also poised to potentially do even better in 2026.
