June 29 marked the commitment date for five-star defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou. Georgia was one of his three finalists along with Ohio Sate and Texas, and after a recent push from the Bulldogs UGA earned themselves a chance to come out on top.
Unfortunately that did not happen as Fakatou announced his commitment to the Ohio State.

Georgia swings and misses with 5-star DL Marcus Fakatou
Fakatou would've been the perfect player for Georgia to add to their recruiting class. Not only is he a five-star recruit, but he is someone that could be a starter the moment he steps foot on a college campus.
Georgia obviously would've loved for that to take place in Athens, but he unfortunately is headed north to Ohio State.
Georgia did everything they could to win Fakatou's recruitment though. The Buckeyes were viewed as the heavy favorite heading into his official visits, but Georgia gave him a lot to think about after he visited Athens. Ohio State also didn't earn his commitment while he was visiting Columbus, so some fans assumed this meant Georgia had a chance to swoop in and come out on top.
That however did not happen and Georgia now has to go back to the drawing board as they look to find other recruits to target in his place.
Georgia needs some good recruiting news in a hurry
Georgia got off to a hot start in the month of June and they've done a decent job at keeping that momentum throughout most of the month, but recently they haven been struggling a bit to earn another commitment.
Before Fakatou the Bulldogs lost elite defensive back Jayden Aparicio-Bailey to Clemson, and considering Georgia doesn't have a defensive back committed to their 2027 recruiting class it's pretty clear how big that loss was.
Thankfully Georgia is in a good place with a few other recruits like fellow defensive lineman Kadin Fife. He just visited Georgia a few weeks ago and two weeks after that trip he decided to decommit from Tennessee. Georgia hasn't won his recruitment yet and there is no sign that he plans on committing soon, but current Georgia quarterback commit Colton Nussmeier thinks UGA fans should expect some good news eventually.
Georgia is still well outside the top 10 recruiting classes in the country. That needs to change in a hurry because at a program like Georgia that is unacceptable. But no one should ever doubt Kirby Smart, and until recruits start signing their letters of intent in December no one should be too worried about where things stand with Georgia's recruiting class.
