Georgia only added 15 transfers out of the portal this year. That is the fewest in the SEC, but most of their acquisitions were expected to make a huge impact on the team this year.
That was especially the case with former Auburn Tiger Amaris Williams who was expected to come to Georgia and immediately help them fix their pass rush issues from a season ago. Unfortunately Williams suffered a season-ending injury this spring when he tore his ACL.
Georgia will have to wait until the 2027 season for Williams to take the field for them for the first time. One Auburn insider at SEC Media Days however said that Georgia will really miss him because he was "a freak" and Georgia would likely "get more use out of him than Auburn did," so that makes his injury feel even worse than it already was.
Auburn insider knows how impactful Amaris Williams' injury is for Georgia
Georgia was one of the worst teams in the SEC last season at pressuring the quarterback. They struggled getting to the quarterback and rarely were able to bring them down, and that's ultimately the biggest reason for their two losses last season.
So Kirby Smart dipped his toes in the Transfer Portal to try and find some new players to help fix that problem, and Williams was supposed to be one of those players. That however will not be happening, and this Auburn insider made it clear how big of a loss it will be for Georgia.
Williams only had 2.5 sacks during his two seasons at Auburn, but it sounds like that had more to do with how they used him. At Georgia he was going to be put a position to be explosive on the edge, and that is where he could've thrived.
Unfortunately all signs point to Williams having to wait until the 2027 season to make that impact for Georgia, but he is still going to do everything he can to come back by the end of this season.
Amaris Williams predicts that his season-ending diagnosis won't come true
It can take anywhere from 6-12 months to recover from an ACL tear depending on how serious the injury is. Since Williams was already ruled out for the season by Georgia it's safe to assume that it was serious, but that didn't stop him from promising that he will try to come back this year.
That however is extremely unlikely to happen, but there is a small chance that it could. His injury occurred in mid-April and six months would take us to October, so if his recovery timeline is shorter than the average person he could be back for the final month or so of the season.
It may be wise for him to wait to come back until 2027 though. That will ensure that he is 100 percent healthy and save him a year of eligibility as well. So while it would be nice for him to come back to help the team this year, in the long run it might be wise to wait until next year.
