It's not often that Georgia has to go into a bye week licking its wounds, but this season, that week off will be a welcome sight for a team that is dealing with a lot of injuries and some mental and physical exhaustion.
Georgia found itself in another difficult SEC battle against Auburn in Week 7, and the Bulldogs haven't always made things easy on themselves. At least once per season, Georgia finds itself in a fight that could go either way. Seems that's where they've been for the last two weeks.
Regardless of how much talent Georgia has or what its postseason goals look like, this is a team that could benefit from a break, especially with the Cocktail Party looming on the horizon.
The running backs, wide receivers, and secondary are all banged up, and watching the Bulldogs today, it was clear that they were suffering from an Alabama hangover. Not necessarily believing their own press clippings, but just spent, both emotionally and physically.
The bye week allows Kirby Smart to address injuries, inconsistencies, and execution before those problems become more costly, as they turned out to be against Auburn. The Bulldogs don't necessarily need to reinvent themselves during the bye week, but they do need to find answers to some lingering questions.
Georgia's mounting injuries make the bye week essential
Georgia was dealing with significant injury concerns coming into this game. The pregame injury report included KJ Bolden, Thomas Blackshear, Isaiah Canion, Chauncey Bowens, and Tyriq Green among those sidelined. Nate Frazier didn't look 100 percent healthy despite taking some snaps this week, and Gunner Stockton was clearly off his game.
Missing key contributors can affect depth, rotations, defensive communication, and offensive flexibility. When the other team knows your options are limited, they attack that weakness.
More importantly, this is Georgia's only scheduled bye week of the regular season, making recovery particularly important. Florida is coming off a huge upset of Texas and will be looking to continue that success, so being as healthy as possible against their biggest rival is going to be key for the Bulldogs.
Georgia doesn't need everyone to return immediately, but Smart needs his roster as close to full strength as possible for the final stretch, starting with the Gators.
Kirby Smart has bigger issues to address than Georgia's health
Georgia was mistake-prone against Auburn, and they were the kind of mistakes that Kirby Smart doesn't usually see his team making.
Three roughing-the-quarterback personal fouls.
Three costly turnovers.
Poor decisions and poor throws by Gunner Stockton
Missed tackles at the line of scrimmage
Every one of those mistakes can likely be chalked up to the team not being mentally prepared and suffering from fatigue. The effort was there, but the results weren't what we are used to seeing.
Georgia entered the Auburn matchup ranked No. 1 in the AP poll after impressive wins over Vanderbilt and Alabama. Georgia wasn't exposed as a bad team. Even championship-caliber programs can develop weaknesses that opponents exploit, or can have a game where the mental mistakes just pile up like they did today.
Georgia was making the kinds of mistakes they usually force other teams to make, and the emotional and mental fatigue was apparent.
Kirby Smart now has a week to address these mistakes, show his team how even one unforced error can make the difference in the game - such as the personal foul that put Auburn well within field goal range for the winning kick.
Georgia's brutal closing stretch makes this bye week even more important
Georgia's remaining schedule is unforgiving, with arguably their best opponents still to come.
Date | Opponent | Venue |
|---|---|---|
Oct. 31 | Florida | Atlanta, Ga. |
Nov. 7 | Ole Miss | Oxford, Ms. |
Nov. 14 | Missouri | Athens, Ga. |
Nov, 21 | South Carolina | Columbia, SC |
Nov. 28 | Georgia Tech | Athens, Ga. |
Dec,. 5 | TBD (SEC Championship) | Atlanta, Ga. |
As it stands right now, it looks like Florida, Ole Miss, and Missouri could all be Top 25 teams when they meet Georgia. That's a lot of ranked and quality teams in a row, with only two more in the home stadium.
Georgia has already shown it can compete with the best teams in college football. But after the Auburn upset, the Bulldogs have been reminded how quickly things can change in the SEC. The bye week gives Smart a chance to make sure one disappointing Saturday doesn't define the rest of Georgia's season.
The goals are still within reach, but are increasingly difficult with the loss to Auburn.
