The first matchup in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff is in the books, and it was an outcome nobody saw coming. 2-seed Ohio State took the field against 10-seed Miami in a game that everyone expected the Buckeyes to win. That however did not occur as Miami dominated the majority of the game and won 24-14.
This sets up a potential showdown for Georgia against Carson Beck and Miami if they can get by Ole Miss in their quarterfinal matchup first. While playing Beck is obviously very intriguing, playing the Buckeyes who couldn't keep Georgia's name out of their mouths since the bracket was revealed would've been pretty nice too.
Carson Beck did what Georgia was hoping they had a chance to do instead
Ohio State defensive back Caleb Downs has a lot of history with Georgia. Out of high school he was one of the top recruits in the country and from the state of Georgia who decided to play for Alabama. After one season with the Tide he entered the Transfer Portal and moved north to Ohio State instead of playing for Georgia.
Players are allowed to do whatever they want, but Georgia fans were a little upset seeing him deny the opportunity to play for Georgia twice.
Fast forward to today and Downs was very excited at the thought of playing Georgia in the CFP semifinals. In fact he mentioned multiple times on his podcast that this is the matchup he was hoping for in the semis. Downs unfortunately may have been too focused on Georgia because Miami more than handled their business against the Buckeyes Wednesday night.
Beck and the Hurricanes did the dirty work for Georgia to setup a potential showdown in the semis. Georgia however can't let that distract them as they need to handle their business against Ole Miss first before they can think about Beck and the Hurricanes.
