Carson Beck will forever be tied to Georgia. Sure he ended his career at Miami after having a solid season with them, but the drama surrounding Beck's departure last year make it impossible for Georgia fans to look away.
Beck was drafted Friday night in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. This is a very intriguing landing spot for him because he will have a chance to win the starting job this fall, but the football world is focusing on Beck for a much different reason.
Beck initially entered the 2025 NFL Draft last year but withdrew his name so he could play for Miami. That decision came with a rumored $4 million payday, but it may have cost him even more in the long run as he will only make $7.4 million over the next four years.
Carson Beck is paying the price for transferring to Miami
Many people questioned why Beck would return to college even for that massive payday. If he was a high draft pick (like he was projected) he would've made much more than he did at Miami. Just look at Fernando Mendoza whose signing bonus will be over $30 million.
At one time in Beck's college career he was viewed as a potential No. 1 overall pick. He however kept returning to college which ultimately cost him more than he ever made from Miami in NIL.
Beck's story should be a warning to any player who is hyper-focused on getting the largest NIL deal possible. Beck just proved that doing this could cost you more money in the long run, so player's focus should remain on earning an NFL contract instead of an NIL deal.
This perfectly aligns with Kirby Smart's NIL strategy at Georgia, so maybe this will end up helping his recruiting.
