CFP committee discusses if losing the SEC Championship can hurt Georgia's ranking
Now that Georgia football has officially made the SEC Championship game, there is one major question on every Georgia fan's mind. What happens to UGA in the College Football Playoff rankings if the Bulldogs lose?
If Georgia were to lose to Gerogia Tech on Friday then nobody will be upset with Georgia falling outside of the top 12, but if UGA loses in the SEC Championship game then most feel that shouldn't impact the Bulldogs' ranking. While that may seem crazy, there is a lot of truth to it.
Why should Kirby Smart and Georgia be punished for playing an extra game most other teams don't play? If Georgia loses and a team behind them wins their conference championship game then by all means move them ahead of Georgia. But should a team like Tennessee who isn't playing deserve to move ahead of Georgia?
Most people would answer no to that question.
The CFP committee was asked about this after the release of their new CFP rankings Tuesday night, and their answer doesn't really clear things up at all.
"We value teams that make the championship," CFP chairman Warde Manuel said. "It is of value to us. But we've been asked by the commissioners to rank the teams all the way through the championship weekend."
Georgia could be punished for losing SEC Championship game
The CFP committee did share that they do value teams making their conference championship games, but at the same time they did not say that they won't move teams down if they lose.
In all honestly, that isn't the worst stance they can take on this. Say Georgia loses in the SEC Championship game by 30 points, everyone would be fine with dropping Georgia in that scenario. But what if UGA only loses by one point? Then they probably shouldn't drop below any team who didn't play in their conference's title game.
The committee's response to this questions seems to align with this as well. But at the same time, the committee this year can't be trusted. They've done many inexplainable things to this point already, so who knows what they'll decide to do after these extra games next week.
But like everyone keeps saying, Georgia just needs to win. That way the committee has no choice but to put them in the 12-team field.
