The updated College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night, and Georgia football received some heartbreaking news. The Bulldogs fell all the way to No. 12, which actually makes them the first team left out of the 12-team playoff field.

Everyone knew Kirby Smart and Georgia would drop after their loss to Ole Miss, but nobody saw this big of a fall coming.

The thing that’s now on every Georgia fan’s mind is why the committee dropped UGA so far. Thankfully the committee explained why Tuesday night.

“Their offense hasn't been consistent. The committee discussed that. They've struggled with some turnovers. Defense has been solid, although in the loss to Ole Miss, we felt that that plays a factor into with the offense struggling, their defense was on the field quite a bit. But they have just lacked some consistency on the offensive side.”

Lack of Consistency

The committee shared that one of the biggest reasons for Georgia’s drop is because of their lack of consistency, specifically on the offensive side of the ball.

There obviously is a lot of truth to that because Georgia’s offense has been pretty awful in recent weeks, especially in their loss to Ole Miss last weekend.

The committee also mentioned the Georgia defense and how they haven’t played as great recently either. They haven’t been nearly as bad as the offense, but they were exposed in certain aspects in Georgia’s last two games.

No Georgia fan will argue against these factors impacting their ranking, but should they be enough to drop them all the way to No. 12? Likely not.

There are so many reasons why Georgia’s new ranking makes no sense, and the committee is showing that they are ranking teams with completely different criteria. But all Georgia can do now is prove the committee wrong, beginning with a big win over Tennessee on Saturday.
