Georgia football has had quite a few players enter the transfer portal since the regular season came to an end, and thankfully for Kirby Smart and UGA not many of those departures have been very impactful. And one of those players who did enter the portal after the season was defensive back Jake Pope.
Pope did not appear in a game for Georgia this season, so that is why him entering the portal wasn't all that bad. But there's another reason why Georgia fans likely won't miss Pope, and that is based on his actions after Georgia's loss to Ole Miss this season.
After losing to Ole Miss, Pope was captured in a video jumping up and down and celebrating with Rebels' fans on the field. Pope later explained that he was just excited to run into some family friends after the game, but this video was still a bad look and caused Smart to call him an "idiot."
It's unclear if this incident caused Pope to enter the transfer portal or if it only had to do with his lack of playing time, but Pope leaving the program was probably the best for both parties. And late on Monday, Pope announced that he will be transferring to UNLV.
Jake Pope transfers to UNLV
Pope began his career at Alabama where he did not see the field, which was the same outcome he faced during his time at Georgia. He clearly is a very good player because you have to be for Alabama and Georgia to want you on their teams, so the hope for Pope is that he will be able to finally find playing time at the college level at UNLV in the fall.
Even though his time at Georgia was filled with controversy instead of on field success, Georgia fans will hopefully move on from that moment after the Ole Miss game and not hold it against him. Pope deserves to be able to move on from this incident, and now that he no longer is with Georgia there is no need for anyone at UGA to focus on this either. So hopefully Pope is able to find success at UNLV so he can finally begin his on field college career.
