Does Kirby Smart think Georgia’s done enough to make the College Football Playoff?
After the rush from beating Georgia Tech on Friday night subsided, one of the things left on every Georgia football fan's mind was if the Bulldogs have done enough to make the College Football Playoff this season or not.
It is a lot easier to make the CFP this year now that the playoff has expanded to 12 teams, but Georgia does have two losses already which has raised some questions from some on if they should be included or not. The CFP committee however is not questioning that right now as UGA earned the 8-seed in their most recent rankings.
Georgia's win over the Yellow Jackets likely won't hurt their chances of making the CFP at the end of the season, but a two point win in eight overtimes won't help either. So there is definitely a debate surrounding if Georgia has done enough to clinch their spot in the playoff already or not.
Kirby Smart was asked about this during his postgame press conference, and he gave the response everyone would expect him to give.
”I don't get into that. I'm not biting on that. I'm worried about the SEC Championship. That's for somebody else to decide,” Smart said via 247sports.com. “I just am proud of our guys for the fight and the grit and the toughness. And that's really my focus. I mean, just keep getting better and don't ride the wave of emotion.”
How should Georgia handle this debate?
While college football fans can debate if Georgia has done enough to earn their spot in the CFP or not, Georgia's coaching staff and team needs to focus solely on the next task at hand. The SEC Championship game.
This game should be enough to grab Georgia's full attention as winning the SEC is a big deal, no matter what happens beyond that. On top of that, winning the SEC Championship game next weekend guarantees their spot in the playoff no matter what. This will also earn them a first round bye, and we all know how badly Georgia needs that extra time off.
So while everyone else can debate on whether Georgia is officially in the CFP or not, Georgia needs to focus on the winner of the Texas and Texas A&M game then handle their business against that team in Atlanta next Saturday.
