Former Georgia wide receiver Zachariah Branch is off to the NFL after one remarkable season in Athens. Branch set the record for the most receptions in a single season in program history this past year, so while his time at Georgia was short his impact will be remembered forever.

Branch unfortunately faced a significant bump in the road as he was arrested the Sunday of NFL Draft week. As details came out about his arrest though it became clear that this was an overreaction by the arresting officer and that Branch should've never been involved in this situation in the first place.

This arrest thankfully did not impact his NFL Draft stock as he was selected in the third round of the draft by the Atlanta Falcons. The charges brought against him though have been hanging over his head for months, but the state announced this week that all charges brought against Branch have officially been dropped.

Charges against former Georgia WR Zachariah Branch were rightfully dropped

Why was Branch arrested in the first place? According toe various reports that came out in the weeks after his arrest, the arresting officer said that Branch did not follow his instructions to move off of a public sidewalk.

A group of people were reportedly attempting to enter a bar that was trying to close, and authorities had to get involved to get them to stop. Branch was not involved in this scene but was just looking on from the side, and the arresting officer apparently did not like that.

Fans erupted after these details came out because he really didn't do anything wrong, and as Branch's lawyer Kim Stephens said in a statement that was released after his charges were dropped, the state agreed that Branch never did anything wrong.

“After reviewing all evidence, including videos, and discussing the case with us, the State agreed to dismiss all charges against Mr. Branch yesterday,” Stephens said via dawgnation.com. “Zachariah cooperated fully with law enforcement and did not commit a crime on the night of his arrest and never should have been arrested. We are glad this matter is over and that Mr. Branch’s excellent reputation and good name restored.”

Zachariah Branch has one thing left to do now that his charges are dropped

The only thing Branch can do now is move on from this incident and focus solely on football. That is the one thing he has probably wanted all along, but this weight being lifted off his shoulders will free him up to focus on the season ahead.

Branch has been hard at work this offseason and has already shown how great of a player he could be for the Falcons. Pundits have said that Branch isn't good enough at running routes as he needs to be to succeed in the NFL, but that may not be true as seen in various highlights posted by the Falcons so far this offseason.

Regardless of what happens this year though it is nice that this situation is in the past before Branch's first season in the NFL begins. He deserves a chance to write his own story and not have any outside factors impacting him, and that is what lies in front of him now.
