Former Georgia football coach denied opportunity to be a new head coach

There are a few current Georgia football coaches who are in the running to be a head coach elsewhere next season. But while Georgia fans wait to see if anyone from their coaching staff departs this offseason, there was one former UGA assistant who was in line to become the new head coach at Colorado State.

Tyson Summers did two different stints in Athens as an assistant coach, but his most recent job found him as the interim head coach at Colorado State this season. Sometimes an interim head coach becomes the new head coach at the end of the season, but Colorado State announced the hiring of UConn head coach Jim Mora on Wednesday instead.

Former Georgia assistant skipped over as new Colorado State head coach

As mentioned, Summers was named the interim head coach at Colorado State after they fired their head coach during the season. Summers however was not hired as their new head coach on Wednesday, likely in part to his 0-4 record since becoming their interim head coach.

Summers first coached at Georgia in 2005 as a graduate assistant. After one year in Athens he left and went to five other schools before returning to Georgia in 2018 under Kirby Smart as a defensive quality control coach. He once again left Georgia after one season which ended his time in Athens for good.

In 2022 he was named a defensive coordinator for the first time of his career at Western Kentucky. He held that title for three years before making the move to Colorado State where he became their defensive coordinator. And after just seven games he was named their interim head coach for the rest of the season.

It’s unclear if Summers will remain at Colorado State next season or not, but this experience as an interim head coach should help land him a good job elsewhere if he does move to a new school.
