Former Georgia QB comments on Carson Beck, UGA's struggling defense
Georgia football has hit the halfway point in their season and they currently sit at 5-1 (3-1). The Bulldogs are also the No. 5 team in the country in the latest AP Poll, but that hasn't stopped the UGA fanbase from panicking with No. 1 Texas up next for Georgia.
There has been a lot of good and bad things recently with this Georgia football team, and the Bulldogs' 41-31 win over Mississippi State is a prime example of that. Great offense and not so great defense.
Former Georgia quarterback legend Eric Zeier broke down what he saw from QB Carson Beck against Mississippi State as well as what he didn't like from the Bulldogs' defense. And it's safe to say that he is seeing exactly what we are.
"The first (Beck) interception was a tipped ball, that just happens," Zeier said via Dawgnation.com. "But he tried to force some. He was throwing the ball well, and sometimes when you are throwing the ball well, you get bulletproof thinking you can put it in certain windows instead of going through progressions."
Beck finished Saturday's game completing 36 of 48 passes for 459 yards and three touchdows. He also had two interceptions, but as Zeier mentioned the first really wasn't his fault.
And while this game from Beck was a career performance, Zeier was quick to point out that there is still a lot of room for improvement, specifically with how he carries himself when he is playing really well. So if Beck can continue to play within the offense instead of trying to be a hero then I think he can have an even better game on the horizon.
Now let's move on to Zeier's comments about the Georgia defense.
"The amount of time we have defensive backs running down the field never getting their heads turned toward the football should be concerning."
This has easily been the biggest complaint I have seen from Georgia fans about the defense. It's impossible to cover receivers well and make a play on the ball if the guys in the secondary aren't even looking back for the ball.
As Zeier mentioned, that is very concerning. Another thing that is potentially even more concerning is the last point Zeier made.
"It’s hard to win championships when you’re giving up 31 points to a freshman quarterback."
To be fair there were some flukey moments and penlaties that kept Mississippi State drives alive, but no matter how you slice it Georgia gave up 31 points. That will always be unnacceptable.
I'll be curious to see how the defense responds against Texas this weekend. On paper you would think they will do even better than Mississippi State just did, but I think we are going to see the defense respond well and make a statement against the Longhorns.
