Georgia football has made a lot of significant changes to their future schedules the past few months. It began with cancelling their home-and-home series against NC State and Louisville even though they were supposed to play Louisville this fall.
Neither of those opponents are known for being great football programs though, so losing those matchups was frustrating but not the end of the world. But it can’t get much worse than Georgia and Florida State canceling their home-and-home series just last week.
Both sides indicated they were working on getting a neutral site game scheduled, but losing a home-and-home series featuring two elite programs is tough to witness. Those feelings got even worse on Tuesday as On3’s Brett McMurphy announced these programs will play a neutral site game in 2028 at one of seven horrific locations.
Florida State & Georgia will play a neutral site game in 2028, FSU AD Mike Alford said. 7 cities - Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando & Tampa - are in the running to host the game

Georgia’s new matchup against Florida State will leave fans wanting more
A few of the proposed locations aren’t terrible. Atlanta is relatively close to both schools and Tampa Bay, Orlando and Miami aren’t bad either, but the other three locations are embarrassing to even suggest.
Why would these teams play in Charlotte? New Orleans and Nashville make absolutely no sense too. The four other locations are at least in Georgia or Florida, but why would this game be played in any other state?
Whichever location is picked though will not be able to live up to what could’ve been. Georgia and Florida State were scheduled to play a home-and-home series in 2027 and 2028, so even the best neutral venue can’t live up to how awesome those games would’ve been.
This however is just a sign of the times, and it’s an unfortunate reality that fans need to get used to.
Disappointing Georgia-Florida State schedule change is a new norm in college football
Arguably the best thing about college football is the environment fanbases bring to each game. That gets amplified in the south as the fans of southern schools can’t live without their college football.
Georgia and Florida State have some of the most passionate fanbases in the country, and they could’ve been put on full display had their home-and-home series stayed in tact. But now these teams will play just one game in 2028 at a neutral site with an atmosphere that won’t even compare to either team’s home stadium.
This however is going to be the new norm in college football. The College Football Playoff committee has shown they don’t care about strength of schedule at all. They also have proven that road wins in a tough environment against a good team mean very little as well. So why would teams play these tough non-conference road games then?
The SEC also has a part in this disaster by adding a ninth conference game each year. There is no need to play a ninth conference game if that means giving up these awesome series against non-conference opponents, but the SEC decided they don’t care about that.
At the end of the day it probably doesn’t matter which city this game is played in. It’s nice that the game is happening, but it won’t be as exciting as Georgia hosting Florida State in Athens or traveling to Tallahassee to face their hostile environment.
Georgia does have home-and-home series with Clemson and Ohio State on their future schedules, but it seems like those matchups are in serious jeopardy based on how this series with Florida State unfolded.
