Georgia basketball's SEC schedule puts Mike White's newfound success at risk

The SEC just announced Georgia's conference schedule for the upcoming college basketball season. The Bulldogs are a program on the rise as they have made the NCAA Tournament two years in a row along with receiving a $10 million dollar donation this offseason as well. Mike White however needs to keep the program moving in the right direction this season or all of this momentum will be for nothing.

Unfortunately Georgia's journey in the SEC during the 2026-27 season will not be easy based on the gauntlet of a schedule the SEC just handed them.

Mike White must manage grueling SEC slate to keep Georgia trending up

Georgia will face 11 teams that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago during their conference season. This is quite a large number, but the SEC has been one of the best conferences in the country the last few years so it really isn't surprising.

Georgia however did get a little fortunate based on who they have to play twice this season. In the SEC everyone has to play three times twice during the regular season, and one of those teams is Florida. The Gators are one of the top programs in the country right now, so that won't be an easy task for Georgia.

The other two teams Georgia will play twice next season is Oklahoma and South Carolina. Both teams failed to make the NCAA Tournament last year, so this is a nice stroke of luck for the Bulldogs.

Even with that being the case though White has his work cut out for him. The SEC projects to be one of the best conferences in the country again this season, so getting back to the NCAA Tournament will not be an easy task.

Realistic expectations for Georgia basketball and Mike White

Georgia isn't quite ready to contend for National Championships yet. In fact, winning the SEC feels way out of reach too. But for a program that went a decade without making the NCAA Tournament that is totally fine.

White and Georgia however have to find a way to improve from the last two seasons though.

Two years ago Georgia went 8-10 in the SEC. Last year they improved by going 10-8. So at the bare minimum Georgia needs to win 11 SEC games this season to show that White is still moving the program in the right direction.

Georgia also needs to find more success in the NCAA Tournament this year. The NCAA Tournament just expanded to 76 teams beginning this season, so there is no excuse for Georgia to miss the Big Dance this year. And when they get there Georgia needs to win at least one game to make up for their embarrassing showings from the last two years.

These expectations are the furthest thing from crazy, but if White wants Georgia to be taken seriously he has to accomplish them. Anything less and Georgia will likely continue to struggle as a program even with their new donation.
