Georgia enters uncharted territory with nation's No. 1 recruit

Georgia basketball has found new life under head coach Mike White over the past few years. After struggling just to make the NCAA Tournament for a decade the Bulldogs finally made it to the Big Dance each of the last two years.

Sure they didn't find any success when they got there, but White clearly has the program moving in the right direction.

Now Georgia has a chance to do the unthinkable by landing the No. 1 recruit in the country. Typically it is Kirby Smart and the football program who have an opportunity to earn a commitment from an elite player, but AJ Williams has Georgia as one of his top six schools right now.

Williams is the No. 1 recruit in the 2028 class. He is someone who can change the outlook for any program in the country, but for a team like Georgia who is struggling to get over the NCAA Tournament hump he could be the one player they need to lead them to a deep tournament run.

Williams is from the state of Georgia, so that is likely why Georgia is among his top six schools. Georgia Tech also finds themselves in his top six as well, so it's clear that he likes both schools just because he is from the state of Georgia.

But Georgia doesn't care why Williams is interested in them, the only thing that matters is that they have a chance to earn his commitment. The consensus right now is that Duke and BYU are leading the pack, but as long as Georgia is in the running there is a chance things can change.

3 reasons why Georgia can land AJ Williams

There are a few reasons why Georgia actually has a chance to land Williams. For starters, they are a program on the rise after making the NCAA Tournament two years in a row. A player like Williams will want to go somewhere where he feels he can compete for a championship, and he could be the player that Georgia has been needing to make a deep tournament run.

On top of that, Georgia also has $10 million to play around with as well. The program received that donation just a few months ago to help with NIL and recruiting, so they could use a good amount of that to try and bring Williams to Athens.

Georgia also has had some success recruiting elite players from the state of Georgia in the past. Anthony Edwards has gone on to be a superstar in the NBA, and he played on year at Georgia after being the No. 1 player in the 2019 recruiting class. Lou Williams and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are two more former five-stars and top 10 players in their class who chose to stay home and play for Georgia as well.

Williams obviously wants to make it in the NBA, and Georgia may not be the first school anyone thinks of when they think of a school who can develop NBA players. But Georgia clearly has a track record with these in-state prospects, so that could really stand out to Williams.
