It is important to recruit every position extremely well if Georgia wants to continue to contend and potentially win more SEC and National Championships. But there are a few positions that are more important than others.
The first and most obvious is quarterback as an elite QB has the ability to elevate a team to reach a standard no one imagined was possible. And if a team's quarterback is so important, then so to is having an offensive tackle who is just as good who can protect that QB.
These are two positions that Georgia has recruited well in the past, but there are many other positions they have recruited better. That however could all change over the next 8 days based on the decisions from two key 2026 recruits.
5-star QB Jared Curtis
The first recruit set to make their commitment is five-star quarterback Jared Curtis, who is the No. 1 QB in the country and the No. 3 overall player. Curtis is down to Georgia and Oregon as his two finalists, and there is a lot of hope coming from both teams that they will win this battle. That means there is a lot of unknown surrounding who he will pick, but thankfully both fanbases don't have to wait much longer.
Curtis will announce his commitment Monday, May 5 at 5:30 pm EST. If Georgia is able to land Curtis for the second time, this will propel their recruiting class to once again contend for the No. 1 ranking in the country. However, if Curtis chooses Oregon instead, UGA will have to pivot to a new option who won't bring as much juice on the recruiting trail as Curtis does.
But potentially the most important reason for landing Curtis is how it could impact the recruitment for the No. 1 offensive tackle in the country.
5-star OT Jackson Cantwell
The next big decision for Georgia after Curtis is five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, who is the No. 1 overall player in the country. Cantwell is set to announce his commitment on May 13, and is fresh of an official visit to Oregon that reportedly went really well.
However, Georgia has one final visit scheduled with Cantwell on May 10 which will be the final visit of his recruitment. Cantwell scheduled this visit while also pushing his commitment date back two weeks, so this was thought to be a great sign for Georgia's chances as seen by UGA receiving an official prediction to land Cantwell.
While this is good news for UGA and indicates they might be the leader, a commitment from Curtis would help Georgia's chances with Cantwell even more. The best players in the country want to play with other really good players, and there is no better duo than landing the top ranked player both at quarterback and offensive tackle.
That is why these next eight days are extremely important for Kirby Smart and Georgia. Landing both players would secure Georgia's place at the top of the college football world for years to come, but missing on both would make accomplishing that a lot more difficult.
So these next eight days could very well be the most important of the last few years for UGA, at least from a recruiting perspective.
