Georgia football has been very active in the transfer portal so far this year. And there have been two positions that Kirby Smart and his staff have been recruiting the hardest, and that is quarterback and wide receiver.
The Bulldogs are yet to earn a commitment from the portal, but they are making a lot of great strides with some receivers. However, the same cannot be said at quarterback as two players Georgia targeted have recently committed elsewhere.
Deshawn Purdie and Fernando Mendoza
The first QB target that Georgia missed on is Charlotte transfer Deshawn Purdie, who announced his commitment to Florida on Sunday.
While it is never fun to miss out on a recruit to the Gators, this loss really isn't all that bad. Purdie was not a player many UGA fans were excited about as he only completed about 50 percent of his passes this season at Charlotte against easier competition then he will face in the SEC. So missing on Purdie may not be all that bad.
The second QB Georgia missed on is a lot higher ranked in Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza who announced his commitment to Indiana.
This loss is more significant than Purdie because Mendoza is the No. 2 QB in the transfer portal according to On3. Purdie had an electric season at Cal and is someone everyone is confident will succeed at any school he chose to go to.
And while it would have been nice to see Mendoza come to Georgia, this loss doesn't feel all that bad either. The reason being is that Georgia may not need to add a QB out of the portal in the first place.
A portal QB feels more like a want than a need as Georgia has four great options on their roster for next season already. There is even a chance that Carson Beck could return for another season, which is an option that feels more likely after his recent injury.
So while it would be nice to add a QB this offseason, it is not nearly as important as adding some talent at wide receiver. So hopefully Georgia is able to earn a commitment at that position, which would be a huge step in the right direction heading into next season.
