Georgia football named Cheez-It Team of the Week
The high praise for Georgia football continues to roll in. How could it not after they just took down the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in their own stadium?
Head coach Kirby Smart earned his 100th win as Georgia's coach, linebacker Jalon Walker was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week in the SEC, and the Bulldogs jumped all the way up to No. 2 in the latest AP Poll. But the praise for Georgia football hasn't stopped as they just received another major award on Tuesday.
The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) has given Georgia the title of Cheez-It National Team of the Week for the weekend of Oct. 19. Knowing how big of a victory this was over the previously undefeated Longhorns, it really is no surprise that they won this award.
This award has been handed out by the FWAA since 2002, and this is the third time Georgia has won this award. The last time the Bulldogs won the award was in 2013 when Georgia defeated No. 6 LSU 44-41.
Three other teams were nominated for this award after this weekend including Illinois (who beat Michigan 21-7), Maryland (who beat USC 29-28), and Tennessee (who beat Alabama 24-17).
This award is a major cause for celebration becuase of how hard it is to win it. The FWAA loves to spread the wealth when it comes to this award, and have handed it out to 101 different programs throughout the award's history.
Who knows what award will come next for Georgia. It seems like they are winning every award possible this week, both in the SEC and on a national scale, but I guess that is what happens when you beat the No. 1 team in the country.
The Bulldogs are on a bye this week before they play rival Florida in Jacksonville on Nov. 2. That will give Georgia ample time to celebrate this win before turning the page to finish the season strong.
