The opening weekend of college football got off to a perfect start for Georgia after they watched Georgia Tech lose in heartbreaking fashion to Colorado Thursday night.
Georgia football fans have their eyes on Athens as the Bulldogs welcome Tennessee State to town on Saturday for their season opener. Other teams from around the country are beginning their seasons a couple days earlier though, and that included in-state rival Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets haven’t beat Georgia since 2016, but they’ve been improving as a program the last few years and nearly beat Georgia the last two seasons. Tech however lost to Colorado Thursday night in their season opener 14-13 after a blocked field goal ended their chances of a dramatic season opening victory.

Georgia Tech’s hilarious loss got Georgia’s opening weekend off on the right foot
Georgia Tech led for most of the night, but with under a minute to play Colorado took a 14-13 lead after a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Yellow Jackets responded quick and marched into field goal range, but as time expired Colorado blocked their game-winning field goal attempt to end the game and secure the victory.
The only thing that truly matters is Georgia winning. Georgia Tech could win every game they play and no one at UGA will care as long as they keep winning and beat them in the season finale. There is something nice though about seeing a rival lose, and it doesn’t get much better than seeing them lose the first game of the season due to a blocked field goal.
While Georgia Tech scrambles to try and save their season the Bulldogs enter their week one matchup as the No. 3 team in the country and the favorite to win the SEC. Nothing is guaranteed for Georgia this year, but at the very least it looks like they’ll have another season that’s better than their in-state rival.
Georgia football’s 2026 season outlook
Gorgia begins their 2026 season with a couple easy home games against Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. Their week three matchup at Arkansas isn’t too intimidating either, but after that their schedule will ramp up.
Throughout the rest of the season they will face four preseason ranked teams along with upset-minded Florida and Auburn. Any one of those games could realistically end in defeat, but Georgia is currently favored to win them all.
Georgia is the favorite to win the SEC again this season. This would mark their third consecutive conference championship which is something only Florida and Alabama have accomplished since the introduction of the SEC Championship game in the early 90s.
Georgia fans however care far more about the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs do still have two relatively recent national championships, but the last three seasons have all ended without a playoff victory.
Kirby Smart will hope to end that trend this season, but it all begins with their season opener against Tennessee State which will hopefully go much better than Georgia Tech’s first game.
