Kirby Smart is hoping to make a big splash on the recruiting trail. Four-star quarterback Peter Bourque is expected to announce his commitment on May 14, and his decision will have a huge impact on the future of Georgia's 2027 recruiting class.

Bourque is down to Georgia, Penn State and Virginia Tech, but recent developments with other quarterbacks have essentially eliminated Penn State from the running. Virginia Tech however has a great chance to land Bourque, but Smart has to do whatever it takes to win this recruitment.

Peter Bourque's commitment will change the trajectory of Georgia's 2027 recruiting class

Bourque is a top 100 recruit and the No. 7 quarterback in the country. A commitment from a player like that would do wonders for any recruiting class, but for Georgia it is especially important that they earn his commitment.

Smart has had some issues finding quarterbacks that have interest in Georgia this year. A lot of that has to do with the fact that Jayden Wade, who is the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class, is already committed to Georgia. On top of that, Georgia's backups shined this spring as well, so some QBs have been turned off by the lack of opportunity that seems to exist in Athens.

Bourque isn't one of those players, and he might be the highest ranked QB in the country who is actually interested in Georgia.

If he chooses Virginia Tech then Smart might not be able to find a QB that is highly ranked this cycle. But if he does commit to Georgia then the Bulldogs recruiting class will soar back up the rankings while also giving them a ton of momentum heading into official visit season.

This may just seem like a standard commitment announcement, but for Georgia's 2027 recruiting class this means everything.

Final Peter Bourque update increases Georgia's chance to win his recruitment

As mentioned, Penn State is one of Bourque's three finalists, but they no longer appear to be in the running. At the start of this week a Rivas insider proclaimed the Nittany Lions as his pick to win this recruitment, but one day later he took to social media saying that was mistake.

Then on Wednesday Rivals logged a prediction for Penn State to win the recruitment for fellow quarterback Will Wood. These two developments make it seem like Penn State is out on Bourque, so Smart has to beat one more team to earn his commitment.

Virginia Tech has a lot more opportunity for Bourque to play early, there is no denying that. If they win this recruitment that will be the reason why and it would be hard to blame him for that.

But Georgia can offer him something that Virginia Tech can't, the opportunity to win championships. Sure he may not play for a few years, but a winning formula has been proven year after year in Athens. Quarterbacks that wait to play at Georgia find success, and every QB that has waited would say the wait was worth it.

Stetson Bennett waited his turn before winning two National Championships. Then it was Carson Beck who waited his turn before going 22-2 in the regular season as a starter and helping Georgia win an SEC title. Now it is Gunner Stockton's turn who also waited for his chance to play and is proving to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

Georgia's formula is proven while Virginia Tech is still figuring things out under a new head coach. Either team would be a good choice though, but there are a lot of reasons for Georgia to be hopeful.
