Another week has passed in the college football world, and this week was just as crazy as any other. Two teams ranked inside the AP Poll's top eight lost this weekend to unranked teams, which is good news for Georgia football because they can now expect to move up in the rankings after their thrilling victory over Georgia Tech.
But how much did Georgia move up? The only team ranked above them that lost was Ohio State, but it was only the second loss for the Buckeyes this season. So there’s no guarantee Georgia would even pass them.
Thankfully however, Georgia did.
Georgia football’s back in the top five
After spending three weeks outside the AP Poll’s top five, Georgia has climbed up the rankings yet again and is the new No. 5 team in the country.
The four teams in front of them are who everyone expected, with Oregon holding steady at No. 1 followed by Texas, Penn State and Notre Dame. The already mentioned Ohio State Buckeyes ended up dropping five spots to No. 7 in this week’s AP Poll.
So this sets up a massive showdown with No. 2 Texas in the SEC Championship game. This game will have the eyes of the entire country on it as Texas looks to get revenge for Georgia’s 15-point win earlier this season.
ESPN’s College GameDay will also be in Atlanta for this game, which only adds to the hype surrounding the game.
If Georgia wins this game, they will immediately jump into the top three because either Oregon or Penn State will lose in the Big Ten Championship game. But at the end of the day, the biggest reason why Georgia needs to win this game is so they earn a first round bye in the College Football Playoff.
So hopefully Kirby Smart and his team are able to accomplish that.
