Georgia football is back in action as they take on Western Kentucky in week two of the college football season. Since the spread for this game was first set by Vegas Georgia was favored by around five touchdowns, but just like with most games that spread has shifted since then.
This spread however has changed multiple times including just hours before kickoff. According to DraftKings the spread initially opened at -35.5 in favor of Georgia. That quickly jumped all the way to -40.5 likely due to Georgia's 60-point week one win. The spread sat there for a few days, but just a couple hours before kickoff it went down a point to -39.5.
This change ultimately doesn't mean much for Georgia. Winning by 39 or 40 points is equally impressive, but bettors are showing a little more confidence in Western Kentucky to cover the spread just a few hours out from kickoff.
Vegas oddsmakers predict a blowout victory for the second week in a row
The Bulldogs are fresh off a massive 63-3 victory over Tennessee State and they are hoping to keep that trend alive against another severely overmatched opponent. History however shows that Georgia could struggle to cover this spread because they are just 1-15-1 against the spread in Kirby Smart's tenure when the spread is at least 38.5 points. It looks like Saturday's spread will close above that number, so Georgia could have a tough time covering.
The good news for Georgia is that the one game they have covered this large of a spread was just last week. They even did so after pulling some of their starters before halftime.
Just becaue Georgia covered a big spread once doesn't mean they are guaranteed to do it again, either way Vegas is confident Georgia will have no issues winning this game and that is what matters most.
Georgia may struggle to cover the spread vs Western Kentucky
There is one other reason why Georgia could struggle covering this spread on Saturday. The fact that Georgia hasn't found much success covering spreads this large under Smart coupled with Georgia's willingness to bench their starters early will make covering challenging, but the step up in competition could impact things too.
Tennessee State was in the FCS which is a step below the FBS which is the highest level of division one football and where Georgia resides. Western Kentucky is in the FBS as well, so on paper they should be a better team than Tennessee State.
That likely is why the spread for this game is nearly 10 points less than it was for the Tennessee State game even after Georgia beat them by 60.
Western Kentucky isn't a Power Four team though, so Georgia shouldn't have a problem beating them. It would be nice if Georgia covered the spread again this week, but the only thing that truly matters is that they win without breaking a sweat and avoid the injury bug.
