For the past two years Texas was predicted to win the SEC. Does anyone remember what happened instead? Georgia, that's what happened.
The Bulldogs beat Texas not once, not twice, but three times during the last two seasons en route to their back-to-back SEC Championships. Now Georgia is looking to win the SEC for the third year in a row which is something only two other schools have done since the SEC Championship game was introduced.
Texas however is the most likely team that will be standing in their way as Vegas once again has them favored to win the conference. Unfortunately they aren't the only ones siding with the Longhorns either as Georgia insider Brooks Austin is also a Texas believer entering the 2026 season as well.
Texas has a flawless roster. They’ve been given every resource required to demand title expectations.

Every hole was filled by a 7 figure transfer.
They even paid Will Muschamp to allow Sark to refocus himself on calling offensive plays. https://t.co/tYB8gGFAPh
Texas has more believers this season than they've earned
What has Texas done to earn the respect that they have? Sure on paper they have a really good roster and fixed a lot of their problems from a season ago, but why is everyone convinced that will be enough for them to finally get over the hump?
Last year they didn't even make the playoff. Last year they didn't even make it to the SEC Championship game. So after two years of failure we're all supposed to just assume that they finally figure it out?
A blind squirrel finds a nut every so often, so maybe Texas will actually win the SEC this year. But the better bet is to side with Kirby Smart and Georgia who have proven time and time again that they can win the conference.
On top of that, Texas has one of the most difficult schedules in the country while ESPN just said that Georgia has the easiest in the SEC. So why is Texas favored to win the SEC over Georgia? Are they really that much better? Likely not, but ever since Texas joined the SEC they have been the offseason champs and many college football personalities apparently want to make sure that continues for another year.
Would losing the SEC to Texas be all that bad?
Georgia obviously wants to win the SEC again this season, and it would probably be the best scenario possible if they knocked off Texas in the SEC title game. But would losing to them in the championship game be all that bad?
That is exactly what CBS Sports predicted will happen, but as they explained that wouldn't necessarily be that bad of an outcome.
CBS Sports predicted that Georgia will go 11-1 this season. They then predicted that Georgia would lose to Texas in the SEC Championship game. Entering the College Football Playoff they see Georgia getting the No. 5 seed which means no first round bye this year, but that might be exactly what they need.
Georgia is 0-2 in the quarterfinals the last two years after earning a first round bye. In fact, teams that earn a first round bye are 1-7 in the quarterfinals over the last two years. So is anyone sure that getting a bye is a good thing?
Maybe getting the 5-seed, playing the 12-seed at home in the first round and then potentially playing the 4-seed in the quarterfinals isn't all that bad. Maybe that's what Georgia needs to finally make a deep playoff run.
Georgia at the end of the day is going to do everything they can to try and win the SEC this year, but if they come up short it may not be the worst thing in the world.
