Scott Howard is out as a play-by-play announcer for Georgia football, and no one quite knows why.

There are several questions being raised as to what exactly went on, on social media and beyond. Some prominent figures have even shared their confused thoughts publicly. Respected Atlanta radio veteran Gary McKillips is among those who sounded off.

"I have never listened to Jeff Danzler, and he could be a good play-by-play guy, but there is no reason in the world he should be replacing Scott Howard as the lead voice on Georgia football," McKillips shared on Facebook shortly after the news came out. "Howard has been a solid presence on the Dogs radio network for 18 years. He is thorough, accurate and exciting. He is everything you want in a play-by-play broadcaster.

I have never heard a negative word about his calls. I can only assume his departure, which he readily admits is not his doing, is the result of some inside dealing, perhaps some alum with a fat wallet deciding he or she wants a change. Radio and television are precarious professions at best. Often superior talent is replaced for no good reason. Often politics are involved. Scott will still be doing basketball at UGA, but I hope he doesn’t let his history with Georgia keep him from seeking other opportunities. If he doesn’t, some team will be getting one of the best voices in football."

And you can put any speculation of medical issues or anything of the like aside on this one. Howard himself has come forward and said that it was not his call to step away from the radio booth at Georgia.

"Thank you to everyone for all the messages," he posted to social media. "Didn’t know that many people had my number. Just to clear up any confusion, respectfully, it was not my decision to step away from the football broadcast."

So, what did happen to Howard? That remains to be seen, and perhaps we will never know. But, if anything, he has a lot fo support and social media commentary though it all from fans and reporters who either knew or listened to him.

Going through all of the responses, the wealth of them all oppose whomever's decision it was to axe Howard. The only real opposition seems to stem from the thought that it was time for Howard to retire... even if it was not on his own terms.

Howard served as the play-by-play voice for the Bulldogs for the past 18 years in Athens, where he gained a lot of admiration. For some fans, he is the only radio voice they have ever known.

This isn't the end of the road for Howard, though, who will still be calling basketball games. We'll see how things progress with that.
