Georgia now leads for 5-star RB Kevin Hartsfield but has lost ground with Kemon Spell

Georgia already has a commitment from the No. 1 running back in the 2027 recruiting class, Kemon Spell. Now they are going all in on Kevin Hartsfield who is the No. 1 running back in the 2028 recruiting class. Georgia has quickly surged to the top in Hartsfield's recruitment, but Spell's commitment to Georgia may not be as secure as once thought.

Hartsfield was in Athens this past weekend during Georgia's blowout win over Oklahoma. Hartsfield was blown away by his visit, so much so that Rivals believes Georgia is the new team to beat in his recruitment.

That news is obviously worth celebrating, but at the same time Georgia is losing ground with Spell. He has been committed to Georgia since February after flipping to the Bulldogs from Penn State. Since he committed he has turned down every flip rumor that has ever come up, but with signing day just two months away there is a new school lurking in the shadows that apparently has a real chance of flipping him.

These two recruitments do not impact each other because they are in two different recruiting classes. Running backs know that they can't play every single snap, so they most likely won't be turned off from a school just because they are targeting other great players.

Looking at Spell's recruitment first there hasn't been a ton of info released about this new school. 247Sports reported on Tuesday that a "big player is in the mix behind he scenes" but they did not reveal who that school was. This however implies two things. This report implies that a school on Georgia's level is attempting to flip Spell and that he is showing interest in them.

Spell is Georgia's highest ranked commit in the 2027 recruiting class. Losing him would be difficult to overcome, so the hope is that Spell will shoot these reports down in the coming days like he's done every time in the past. If this report is true though then he likely will take a visit to this mystery school in the coming weeks which would tell Georgia who their new competition is.

Georgia's top priority right now is keeping Spell in their recruiting class since signing day for him is only two months away. Hartsfield is still an important target though even if his recruitment still has a year to go.

Georgia has been in the running for Hartsfield throughout the past year, but it was never known where they exactly stood against the other top schools in his recruitment. After his visit this past weekend though Rivals believes they are the No. 1 team in his recruitment.

A few other big schools are also pursuing Hartsfield and it's likely that he will take a few more visits this fall and next summer before making his final decision. That isn't any reason for Georgia to panic though because that is a normal timeline for a recruit who is still a junior in high school, but Georgia made their case this past weekend and it clearly grabbed Hartsfield's attention.

There's a perfect world out there where Georgia keeps Spell in their recruiting class and wins Hartfield's recruitment as well. There's also a scenario where Georgia ends up with neither. Spell is the name Georgia fans should be watching the closest right now, but Hartsfield is someone to monitor over the next year as well.
