Pat McAfee is a controversial figure, but he was spot on correct with his pick of Georgia beating Alabama. Nick Saban couldn't bring himself to go with the Bulldogs, even though he knows they are a complete team. Desmond Howard and Bryce Young also jumped on the home team bandwagon, and they were wrong.
Pat McAfee was right, there, I said it.
He got thrown to the ground by Young and Saban for his courageous pick, but he still called the Dawgs from the ground to the delight of Georgia fans everywhere.
Here's why Pat was right.
Georgia rose to the expectations Alabama couldn’t meet
The odds were not in Georgia's favor ahead of the game and numerous penalties and near fumbles only served to make the game closer than it needed to be. But Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo coached the team to a signature win to further dispel the nonsense that Georgia has a Bama curse.
Getting third down conversions made a huge difference. Gunner Stockton passed for nine of ten of those, which kept drives alive and momentum rolling throughout the game. Chris Cole consistently pressured Keelon Russell and the Georgia defense sacked him enough to thwart drives.
So even though Georgia was doubted by many, they played more than well enough to win.
Recruiting paid off
With Chauncey Bowens and Nate Frazier out with injuries, Dwight Phillips and Bo Walker stepped up to help contribute to 455 total yards of offense against a stout Bama defense. Talyn Taylor made key catches at the right time to continue drives and get first downs as well. Up and down the roster it was clear that Kirby Smart's recruiting efforts provided a deep bench to lead to the win.
Coach Smart's focus on developing players and building success paid off big time in Tuscaloosa Saturday night. Veterans and new faces mixed together for a cohesive team effort to get a major win on the road in a hostile environment against the arch nemisis that is Alabama. Smart was rightfully smiling at the end of the game, as it reflected a job well done. Not just with winning the game but also with the hard work in the off season to recruit all these talented players.
Pat Mcafee doesn't always pick the Georgia Bullgogs and he has often been wrong. But on this weekend, he got it right. He picked the winner. And I tip my hat to him. This time. May this good mojo keep moving toward Auburn next week!
