Monday was potentially the biggest day of news so far this summer for Georgia football. Most of the news for UGA was good, but unfortunately the biggest development turned out to be bad news.
So let's begin with the bad news first then wrap up with one of the most exciting updates to hit Georgia so far this summer.
5-star LB Tyler Atkinson is ready to commit
Five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson is the No. 1 linebacker in the country and the top ranked player from the Peach State. This has made him an extremely important target for UGA and someone Georgia fans felt like they need to add to their class.
Atkinson shared Monday night that he will announce his commitment on Tuesday, July 15 between Georgia, Texas, Clemson and Oregon. The Bulldogs were thought to be the favorite to win this battle over the last few months, but unfortunately a last second prediction has been made in favor of Texas.
This doesn't eliminate Georgia's chances to win this recruitment, but something crazy will have to happen for UGA to end up winning this battle.
Latest recruiting update gives Georgia two new 5-star commits
Rivals released a new update to their recruiting rankings on Monday, and this update gave Georgia two new five-star commits.
Defensive lineman James Johnson came in as the No. 10 overall player in the country which easily gave him his fifth star. Then there is corner Justie Fitzpatrick who is now the No. 29 player in the country according to Rivals. Technically Fitzpatrick is still a four-star, but at the end of the cycle Rivals will give five stars to their top 32 recruits, so Fitzpatrick will eventually get his fifth star if he stays put at No. 29.
Georgia named new No. 1 team in the 2026 team rankings
Johnson and Fitzpatrick weren't the only Georgia commits to shoot up Rivals updated recruiting rankings. Offensive tackle Ekene Ogboko and wide receiver Craig Dandridge were two UGA commits who increased their ranking the most out of every other recruit in the country.
These massive improvements are amazing on their own, but combining all of them together officially gave Georgia the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Georgia now will look to hold on to that title for as long as possible, but for now Kirby Smart once again has the best recruiting class in the country heading to Athens.
