Georgia secured their spot in the College Football Playoff on Friday after their 16-9 win over Gerogia Tech. However, there is still a full weekend of college football as well as next week's conference championship weekend before they learn what their path in the CFP looks like.
Georgia would not have been able to move any higher than No. 4 in the CFP rankings until one of the three undefeated teams above them lost. Thankfully one of those teams finally lost as Texas handed Texas A&M their first loss of the season Friday night. This not only paves the way for Georgia to move up one spot when the CFP committee releases their updated rankings next week, but it also clinched UGA's spot in the SEC Championship game as well.
Before this loss Georgia was comfortably the No. 4 seed without much of a chance to move up or down, but the Aggies loss gives Georgia a few potential seeding scenarios that could occur over the next week.
Georgia's College Football Playoff scenarios entering Championship weekend
As it stands today, Georgia will be the No. 3 overall seed when the committee releases their next set of rankings next week. Ohio State and Indiana will remain above the Bulldogs as long as they stay undefeated, but if one of them lose then Georgia will move up one more spot to No. 2. The good news for Georgia is that they are guaranteed to move up one spot at some point as long as they win the SEC Championship game.
Indiana already won their regular season finale against Purdue, so the Hoosiers are 12-0 and in the Big Ten Championship game. Ohio State is one win against Michigan away from joining them at 12-0 in their conference's title game as well. So either Ohio State will lose to Michigan for the fifth year in a row and drop in the rankings, or the Buckeyes will play Indiana next week which will end in a loss for one of them. Either way Georgia will move up to No. 2 as long as they win the SEC Championship.
So if Georgia keeps winning they will enter the playoff as the No. 2 seed in the CFP for the second year in a row. If they lose the SEC Championship game though they will likely drop a few spots in the rankings, but not far enough where they fall outside the 12-team field. It's anyone's guess how far they would drop, but Georgia would likely end up seeded between No. 5 and No. 8 which would give them a first round home playoff game.
Now that would be a good consolation prize for losing the SEC Championship game.
