The Georgia Bulldogs are no stranger to terrible game times across all their athletic departments. Not too long ago Athletic Director Josh Brooks spoke out against the early start times, stating "Nothing says 'top remaining seed' like an 11:00 AM Saturday start for Game 1" ahead of their game against Mississippi State. And he is right, those that play well deserve to have favorable game times.
However, this time, the College World Series finally got it right for Georgia.
Georgia received a prime time spot for the biggest game of their season
Whether it be the efforts from Brooks, the fans, or something else, Georgia fans finally got what they have been wishing for. Georgia will play against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha with first pitch set for 8:00 pm EST on ESPN.
Meanwhile, Alabama and Oklahoma will kick off Saturday's games earlier that Saturday with the winner of that game advancing to play either Georgia or Texas.
The baseball team is not the only program that has had issues with unfair game times. Kirby Smart and the football team have spoken out several times about the way their games have been scheduled in the past. Specifically, the fans have been tired of having noon games or having to travel to Tuscaloosa and Oxford instead of being able to play their rival Tennessee.
Maybe Brooks' efforts have paved a way for both programs to be able to receive more favorable game times in the future across athletic departments. Brooks has been a lot more vocal lately towards the way the NCAA has treated programs across the board, so it is nice that his efforts this time were rewarded with Georgia getting the prime time game at the College World Series on Saturday.
Everything is on the line for Georgia when they play Texas at the CWS
Georgia has played a lot of big games this season, but it doesn't get any bigger than Saturday night.
If Georgia were to lose to Texas their season wouldn't be over yet, but for all intents and purposes it would feel like it. A Georgia loss would send them to the loser's bracket which would mean they would have to win four games in a row just to make it to the National Championship series.
Sure that is possible, but against the caliber of teams left in the tournament it would not be ideal.
Conversely, if Georgia were to beat Texas then they would only need to win two more games to get to the National Championship series.
Vegas oddsmakers believe that Texas will beat Georgia on Saturday. Don't tell head coach Wes Johnson that though because he made it clear this week that he doesn't care what the have to say whether it's good or bad news.
But regardless of what Vegas thinks this is a game Georgia has to win. If they can pull it off then they would have great chance to make it to the National Championship series and bring a national title home to Athens for the first time since 1990.
