Georgia is off and running at the College World Series after a dominant opening game in Omaha. The Bulldogs faced a tough Texas team who is the No. 6 national seed and were 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament entering the CWS, but they were no match for Georgia as UGA went on to win 7-1.
Every single player did their part Saturday night for Georgia, but one player will be remembered forever after their show-stopping performance on the mound.
Joey Volchko leads the charge as Georgia takes control of their destiny in dominant CWS performance for the ages
18 years is a really long time. That’s how long it had been since Georgia played in the College World Series, but UGA didn’t let the moment get to them as they dominated Texas all night long.
Starting pitcher Joey Volchko was the MVP of the night as he pitched all nine innings and only gave up one run and four hits while striking out 15 batters. He had complete control of the Longhorns’ lineup from the very first pitch as he struck out the side in the first inning and never looked back.
Speaking of the first inning, Georgia’s offense put up four runs and never looked back either. Sure those runs were aided by multiple Texas errors, but you won’t see anyone from Georgia apologizing.
It’s rare to have a stress free win at the College World Series, but that is the luxury that Georgia got to experience in their CWS opener.
Georgia beat Texas on the biggest stage once again
Texas fans must hate Georgia so much because all they’ve done since joining the SEC two years ago is lose to UGA on the biggest stages.
Most of those losses have come on the football field as Georgia is 3-0 against Texas since they joined the conference. This includes a victory in the 2024 SEC Championship game and a win at Texas in 2024 when the Longhorns were the No. 1 team in the country.
Now it was the Diamond Dawgs turn.
Sure Georgia lost three times to Texas in 2025, but that was in the regular season. This victory Saturday night came on the biggest stage college baseball has to offer, and that is an outcome that is all too familiar for both Georgia and Texas fans.
What's next for Georgia at the College World Series?
The College World Series is a bit different from the Regional or Super Regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Teams play games every single day in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, but at the College World Series they get a lot of time off.
The Bulldogs will get one day of rest before they take the field again on Monday, June 15 against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners knocked off No. 7 Alabama in dominant fashion 9-0 and present a huge challenge for Georgia even though they are not seeded nationally.
The winner of this game will take complete control of this four-team bracket and will only need to win one more game to advance to the National Championship series. The loser will be demoted to the loser's bracket and have to win three games in a row if they want a chance to play for a national title.
So it's safe to say that everything is on the line for Georgia when they play Oklahoma. But this Georgia team is legit, and they have every chance to bring a championship home to Athens.
First pitch between Georgia and Oklahoma is scheduled for Monday, June 15 at 7:00 pm EST.
