Last week Georgia became the first program to win the SEC in football and baseball in the same year. A feat that hadn't accomplished since 2009, Georgia has found their way to the mountaintop of the conference in America's favorite sports.
Notably one of the toughest conferences in college athletics, this is no small feat for the University of Georgia. With the baseball team now moving forward to the NCAA Tournament and the football team looking to three-peat in the upcoming year, their dominance looks to continue.
However, this should not be looked at as "luck" or "one in a generation." This level of dominance has been something in the making for several seasons.
How Georgia's reign in football and baseball came to be
Most people by now know what Kirby Smart has been able to do with the football program. Anyone could write a five-page essay on statistics that prove how Smart has transformed the Bulldogs in the decade that he has been the head coach.
In short, he has turned them from a dark-horse sleeper candidate for SEC East Championships to a national title or bust program. He's led Georgia to two national titles and four SEC championships so far, proving this past season was no fluke for success. The football team has recruited and built a team to sustain success, and they won't be going anywhere any time soon.
The baseball team does not get as much hype as the football team, but that might have to change. And hopefully this recent championship does just that.
In fact, we could very well be seeing a similar start to a coaching career that we did from Smart in 2016. Head Coach Wes Johnson, since arriving in 2023, has led the Bulldogs to three straight 40-win seasons. He has also recruited to sustain success with having produced the 2024 Golden Spikes Award winner, Charlie Condon, who was the highest MLB Draft pick in school history (No. 3 overall).
Now with an SEC Championship under his belt and a chance for a nationtitle later this year, the baseball team is just beginning their reign of the conference.
Make no mistake, this overall success from the program is not a fluke. This has been the masterwork of two extraordinary head coaches that have recruited in a way that bring honor to a historic program. As they continue to make history, we as fans should be appreciative of the time we are living in as Bulldogs faithful.
