Georgia may have lost to Auburn on Saturday, but their season is far from over. Not only do they still have a good chance to make it to the College Football Playoff, but they can still win an SEC title as well.

Their odds to win the SEC actually didn't drop all that much because a wild day in the conference saw many of the front runners lose as well.

A wild day in the SEC keeps Georgia's championship aspirations alive

Entering this weekend Georgia was the last unbeaten team left in the SEC. This gave them some breathing room when it comes to making it to Atlanta, and they unfortunately wasted that breathing room with this loss to Auburn.

Georgia however still has a great shot to make it to Atlanta anyways. Two of the other favorites to win the SEC this season were Alabama and Texas, and they both lost on Saturday as well. This was the second loss for both of these teams, so the chance they even make it to Atlanta are relatively low now.

Georgia is one of just four teams with one loss in the conference. Kentucky, Tennessee and Ole Miss are the other one loss teams left in the SEC who Georgia is competing against to make it to Atlanta, and the good news for them is they play Ole Miss later this season and can knock them out of contention. Georgia doesn't play Tennessee or Kentucky this year, but it would be surprising if both teams went the rest of the season without another loss.

As long as Georgia wins their final four conference games they should make it to Atlanta. They could even still make it at this rate even if they lost one more game, but if Georgia handles their business the rest of the season they should be fine.

Georgia's CFP hopes are still in tact

The bigger goal for Georgia is winning a national championship, and that goal is still alive after their loss to Auburn.

Not only was it a wild day full of upsets in the SEC, but that was the case throughout all of college football. No. 2 Notre Dame lost on Saturday as did No. 5 Indiana, so this means Georgia should stay above both of these teams in the rankings. Georgia however doesn't need to worry about anyone else when it comes to making the playoff because they could still lose one more game and have a great chance to make the 12-team field.

College football fans could argue though that losing to Auburn shows that Georgia isn't a serious national title contender, but that isn't true. Just look at the last two years of the playoff and you'll see that this loss could actually propel Georgia to a deep playoff run.

Last year Miami lost to two unranked teams in the regular season yet they still made it all the way to the national championship game. In 2024 eventual national champion Ohio State lost as a big home favorite to their rival Michigan who barely made a bowl game, that defeat looks eerily similar to Georgia's loss to Auburn.

Georgia still has everything to play for this season. Sure losing to Auburn makes it more difficult for them to accomplish their goals, but this loss doesn't end their season by any means.
