Georgia's matchup against Oklahoma was everything that baseball fans want in a College World Series game. Two of the best teams in the country throwing haymakers with everything on the line in front of an amazing crowed made for the best game at the CWS so far this year, the only thing that was missing was a Georgia victory.
Georgia fell just short against the Sooners 4-3 in a game they will feel like they could've won. Ultimately they only have themselves to blame because there were multiple plays that could've swung this game in their favor.
Georgia only has themselves to blame after CWS loss to Oklahoma
Oklahoma deserves lot of credit for this victory. They played very well and got an amazing performance from freshman pitcher Xander Mercurius who threw 7.1 impressive innings.
But even if Oklahoma played very well, Georgia will head back to the drawing board thinking that they let this one slip away.
For starters, Georgia got off to a horrible start in the first inning. They failed to score any runs in the top of the first which really isn't that big of a deal, but in the bottom of the inning they dug themselves a deep hole by giving up three runs. They also had a couple horrific throws that allowed Oklahoma to move base runners and give them more momentum
This forced Georgia to have to claw their way back all game long, and for the most part they did a good job of that. They however were unable to manufacture any runs as all three of their runs came from solo long balls.
And one of the only times they had a chance to manufacture a run Ryan Wynn was picked off at second base to end the inning.
The Sooners deserve all the credit in the world for winning this game, but Georgia will feel like they handed them this victory on a silver platter to a certain extent.
Who does Georgia play next at the College World Series?
Georgia will head to the losers' bracket where they will once again face the Texas Longhorns.
After Texas lost to Georgia in game one at the College World Series over the weekend, the Longhorns were demoted to the losers' bracket and dismantled Alabama 14-2 in their elimination game on Monday.
As a reminder, Georgia dominated Texas 7-1 during their first game at the CWS, but none of that matters anymore as they will need to beat this Longhorns team again.
What is on the line in Georgia's CWS matchup against Texas?
Georgia's season comes down to this game. If they lose to Texas their magical season will come to an end and they will head back to Athens empty-handed.
However, if Georgia wins they will move on to their four-team bracket final where they will get another crack at this Oklahoma team. They would have to beat Oklahoma twice to advance to the National Championship series, but they can't worry about that yet.
Texas is looking for revenge, but Georgia is looking to cap off one of the best seasons in program history. Only one team will advance, and at this point anything is possible.
First pitch between Georgia and Texas is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 at 8:00 pm EST.
