Fall camp has been ongoing for Georgia football for a few weeks now, but one key transfer is yet to participate. That transfer is former Illinois running back Josh McCray.
McCray's absence has been well documented throughout Georgia's fall camp so far, and unfortunately Georgia's star transfer did not participate in their scrimmage this past weekend.
"Illinois transfer Josh McCray did not take part in the scrimmage and was seen running in the end zone," Mike Griffith shared via dawgnation.com. "Smart said the 240-pound McCray was ill last week, and it appeared he was still not back to 100 percent."
Transfer RB Josh McCray still sidelined with an illness
When the Georgia media attended the Bulldogs first fall practice a couple weeks ago, it was noted that McCray was nowhere to be seen. His absence also was not discussed by Kirby Smart and his staff that day, so it was unclear what was going on with McCray and where he was.
Fast forward to last week and Smart did share that McCray has been dealing with an illness this fall that reportedly still kept him sidelined during Georgia's scrimmage this weekend. The good news though is that McCray was present during the scrimmage, which was not the case during previous fall practices. McCray was also seen running around outside of the scrimmage, which is a good sign that his health is improving.
No update has been provided stating what illness McCray is dealing with, but it must be pretty serious to keep him out for this long. McCray was projected to be Georgia's No. 2 running back this season behind Nate Frazier, but this illness could prevent that at the start of the season. Missing this much time will make it really challlenging for him to learn a new offense and stay in good enough shape as well, so it wouldn't be surprising to see this illness impact his playing time initially.
Georgia fans will find out in a few weeks how much McCray will play against Marshall on Aug. 30, but the fact that he was seen running around this weekend is a good sign going forward.
